2010:POLITICS IN MALAYSIA WAS WON BY PUBLIC RELATIONS?

Salam kepada semua.....
BAGAIMANA POLITIK DI MALAYSIA SEPANJANG 2010?

APAKAH PANDANGAN ANDA SEMUA MENGENAI ISU POLITIK NEGARA INI?

ANWAR IBRAHIM VS NAJIB RAZAK?

IN politics, 2010 has been a year of the triumph of public relations.

Barisan Nasional (BN) played the public relations game to the hilt and scored major points. Pakatan Rakyat (PR), on the other hand, showed a lack of public relations savvy and is now suffering for it. Its public image is experiencing such a severe decline that the coalition may not soon find the road to recovery, much less the road to Putrajaya.

Public relations is about spinning illusions; it’s no substitute for good, honest politics, but unfortunately, its role in creating positive public perception about the party has made it an essential political weapon. Employing the services of Apco, McKinsey and Co, and other public relations companies, BN has wielded the weapon to its advantage.

This year has seen it come out with a series of three-letter abbreviations to sell as dreams to the Malaysian public. Considering how easily some Malaysians have fallen victim to Internet scams, you have to say it’s been clever of Prime Minister Najib Razak to hawk GTP, ETP, NEM and whatever else to make it appear he’ll deliver sure success. Never mind that he has done nothing to bring about the much-needed reforms that are essential to putting our institutions in proper working order again, such as restoring the independence of the judiciary, revamping the police force, freeing the media, making the Elections Commission independent, etc.

BN of course has the means to pay for the public relations advice using taxpayers’ money, and it has the government machinery to showcase the gimmicks. Not to mention the cooperation of the mainstream media as well.
PR, however, has none of these at its disposal. It depends quite a bit on the vagaries of luck and circumstance.

In fact, 2010 started on a promising note for PR. When churches were attacked after the High Court allowed The Herald to use the word “Allah”, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim called the attacks “unIslamic” and won approval from moderate Malaysians.

Najib, on the other hand, was hit with the prospect of Christians in Sabah and Sarawak withdrawing their support for BN. And because, prior to the attacks, in the face of impending protests by Muslim groups against the court’s ruling, he himself had said, “We can’t stop people from demonstrating”, he was reviled for sending out a wishy-washy signal instead of a stern warning.

One month later, however, things took a nasty turn for PR when the “frog festival” started. From mid-February to mid-May, four MPs left PKR to become Independents “friendly to BN”. In between, the party sacked another of its MPs for continually attacking the party’s stand within PR.

All the dirt came out in public as the “frogs” croaked about their former party’s doings. Other “frogs” who hopped out were two assemblymen from PKR and one from the DAP. The most steadfast and principled of the partners has been PAS; none of its representatives have defected to the other side.

The developments got worse for PKR when it lost its sixth place in Parliament after the death of its MP for Hulu Selangor and the subsequent defeat of its candidate in the ensuing by-election. To top it all, it merely took a virtual unknown from the MIC to vanquish PKR’s bigwig, Zaid Ibrahim. Zaid took the matter to court, alleging bribery in the by-election, but although the public dubbed it “the buy-election” and criticized BN’s money politics, the judge struck out his petition.

Indeed, although PAS and the DAP had their own in-fighting and problems, and even problems with each other in 2010, PKR was the worst off among the PR partners. Towards the end of the year, it lost much credibility because of its party elections. Ironically, what should have been a historic occasion for Malaysian democracy – the first time a political party was holding direct elections in order to allow every member to vote for the party’s leaders – turned into a fiasco, with allegations of electoral fraud and vote-rigging, and, above all, the exit of Zaid Ibrahim in the most ugly of circumstances. It capped an annus horribilis for PKR.

Zaid’s bad-mouthing of the party was most unbecoming, and his lack of regard for being a team player showed his political true colors. He later joined an existing party based in Kelantan, renamed Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (Kita), and became its president. But it’s unlikely that he will be taken seriously any more, except perhaps by his closest supporters.

In total, there were four by-elections this year, three of which were won by BN. The only PR win was the one in Sibu in which the DAP candidate won against heavy odds, including Najib’s attempt to win votes for BN by offering to “make a deal” with the electorate. His sleazy pitch was caught on video, causing Malaysians who watched it to wonder if he was really a prime minister or a salesman.

The Sibu victory was sweet, but it’s unlikely to be an indicator of a sea change in Sarawak politics. There are pockets of disgruntlement with Chief Minister Taib Mahmud’s 30-year reign but these are mainly in the urban areas. Taib and his people know how to push the right buttons and appease the larger populace, so despite the increasing number of exposés alleging corruption and abuse of power by “the white-haired rajah”, the Sarawak state elections that will be held early next year will most likely go his way.

In other parts of the country, the electoral signs are also pointing in favor of BN. Although pundits claimed that BN’s victories in the Galas and Batu Sapi by-elections in November did not necessarily represent the people’s sentiment nationwide, the boost for its morale provided by this double victory could propel BN forward with greater confidence.

Another by-election looms, in the state constituency of Tenang in Johor. This is a BN stronghold, so a BN win with an even larger majority this time will be further reassurance that the coalition is recovering from its 2008 debacle. There’s nothing like winning and winning to draw back the supporters who had strayed in the last general election. For this reason, some PR supporters feel it may be best for the Opposition to refrain from contesting, like BN did in the Penanti by-election of 2009. Better not to find out what the outcome might be than to be trounced and be demoralized and to drop lower in public perception.

Will a general election be called soon? This has been the buzz in the public space the last several months. Much of it has been fed by developments that seem to indicate the affirmative.

In July, former minister and MCA president Ling Liong Sik was charged with cheating the Government. Earlier this month, former Selangor mentri besar Mohd Khir Toyo was charged with corruption. Last week, ex-Immigration Department deputy director Yusof Abu Bakar received a hefty sentence of 56 years’ jail and a fine of RM620,000 for taking RM121,500 in bribes.

This is somewhat reminiscent of the time when the previous prime minister, Abdullah Badawi, tried to mount a campaign against corruption. But, as we know, it turned out to be a flash in the pan.

At the Umno general assembly in October, Najib contradicted his 1Malaysia stand by staunchly defending Malay rights, and ominously talked of crushed bodies and lost lives in defending Putrajaya, “no matter what”. It was clear he was priming Umno’s devotees for battle.

Then at the BN convention in early December, he came out looking like a sleazy spinmeister striking low blows at PR, calling it “anti-national”, “very dangerous” and “despicable”, words aimed at stirring the emotions of the electorate against the enemy.

Samy Vellu finally stepped down as MIC president, which means BN has got rid of a liability, making it even more ready to face an impending general election. Samy was, however, made a special envoy with ministerial status, a move that discerning Malaysians could not see any sense in. Many had been waiting for years to see him leave; instead, he’s been rewarded and kept on the people’s payroll.

Meanwhile, Santa Claus is working hard to dish out presents: memorials will be built for Tan Cheng Lock and V Sambanthan; Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently said the armed forces could expect a “substantial” pay rise; the controversial rapper Namewee was suddenly acknowledged by minister Nazri Aziz as a “grossly misunderstood” young man who could look to the prospect of getting some government support. If Namewee does get such support, one wonders where his vote would go at the next general election.

The next question is, when will the general election be held? And will there be enough time for PR to salvage its image and bounce back with a plan to win voter confidence?

To allay its skeptics, PR announced at its convention last week that should it take over the government, it would implement reforms within the first 100 days. Among these reforms:

  • Restructuring institutions like the Elections Commission, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Attorney-General’s Chambers and the Royal Malaysian Police;
  • Repealing the Internal Security Act (ISA);
  • Abolishing the highway toll system;
  • Increasing the incentives for teachers by RM500 a month;
  • Increasing oil royalty payments to Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu and Kelantan;
  • Forming a Royal Commission to solve the problem of illegal immigrants and citizenship issues in Sabah and Sarawak.

These look good on paper. If they were to be carried out, Malaysians would see things done that have never been done before. It begs to be asked why BN has not thought of some of them already, as they would surely bring much benefit to the people. However, all Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin could offer in rebuttal was that it sounded like “a supermarket sale”.

Even so, PR needs to do more to get back in the game. Already, other groups are coming in as potential contenders against BN. Apart from Kita, there is the Human Rights Party (HRP), which grew out of Hindraf. It plans to stand in 15 parliamentary and 38 state seats. Now there is also the Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (MCLM), which proposes to offer candidates of integrity and intelligence who would not sell their allegiance and be able to debate with substance in Parliament.

MCLM will first offer these candidates to non-BN parties, but if they are not taken up, they will stand as independents. The downside of this is that it will bring about three-cornered fights, which invariably cause the Opposition votes to be split and therefore end in BN victories.

To be sure, a fragmented Opposition is certainly not the answer. That had been the curse of the Opposition until 2008. Now more than ever, with every vote being crucial at the next general election, which we know will be a very tough one, there can only be one united Opposition coalition to take on BN. Otherwise, the consequences will be dire.

ISLAM DOES NOT PROHIBIT AEROBICS IN MOSQUES

Islam does not prohibit any activity, including aerobics, to be carried out in the compound of a mosque as long as such activities do not contravene Syariah principles, PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said.

He said it should not be a problem for either Muslims or non-Muslims to conduct any activity outside or inside the mosque.

"In Islam, it is not wrong for certain quarters to hold activities in  mosques because even during the time of Prophet Muhammad, non-believers were also allowed to enter mosques because they also acted as the centre for various activities, including politics," he told reporters after delivering a Friday sermon at Dataran Ilmu, here today.

The Kelantan Menteri Besar was commenting on the action of Serdang Member of Parliament Teo Nie Ching who was reported to have entered the compound of Taman Cheras Jaya Mosque in Balakong, Selangor in tight attire and participated in some aerobics exercise with the congregation of the mosque, which was deemed as disrespecting the house of worship.

Nik Abdul Aziz said the question whether the member of Parliament was wearing immodest dress was the second thing that needed to be addressed.

"Most importantly, we have to tell them the things that are religiously forbidden while in the mosque ... we have to explain the Islamic rules and regulations before he or she be allowed to enter the mosque," he said.

Prior to this, Nie Ching had also caused a controversy when she delivered a talk in a surau in Kajang Sentral, Kajang in August.

YEAR 2011:DANGEROUSLY LIVE FOR NAJIB RAZAK?

The coming year will decide if Najib Razak is made of the right stuff or not. Everything he has experienced in his various avatars the last 34 years of public life will culminate in 2011. To decide if he is the next Malaysian leviathan or a space filler like Abdullah Ahmad Badawi waiting for his exit countdown to complete
.
Najib has spent most of his career as a consummate pragmatist. Willing to wait it out even if he misses the opportunity for a leap, in order to avoid a fall — Najib does not like to lose. He has little experience in that.
But why 2011 you ask? The honeymoon of taking over office would have effectively ended. So too the novelty of all his new paradigms, and everyone will start to clamber around looking for proof in the pudding.
And there is the question of him getting his own mandate — every one of his predecessors in their early years has been fortunate here; Tunku Abdul Rahman in 1952 (though it was just the KL local council elections), Razak in 1974 (Goodbye Alliance, Hello BN), Hussein in 1978 (We can do it without PAS development), Mahathir in 1982 (You may not like my potong gaji and time clock thing, but you’ve voted for me) and Abdullah in 2004 (Look, look, I’m not Mahathir).

Najib can wait till 2012, but all the birds have been chirping about the coming year. One suggested there will be no new Petronas undertakings until polls are held, apparently other things need greasing now.A general election would be major. However, the central theme of the enquiry is whether Najib is a man of destiny, makes lives better — at least in the qualitative assessment of the Malaysian voters?

Therefore the first six months of 2011 will be about not having any negative news about the economy or the projects/transformations which he has initiated. Idris Jala’s Pemandu and the BN labs have to come good, it cannot just be about what they can do, it is time for what they have.

The second flank, and frankly the harder flank to defend is the campaign proving Malaysia is for all — the 1 Malaysia. The prime minister received plaudits for his visit to a church and asserting that the Christmas message was equally applicable to all Malaysians, Muslims included. However, within four days he is plagued by accusations his people asked the visited church before his arrival to make it less Christian looking. And now he has come unstuck.

Najib has picked an untenable position with his 1 Malaysia since his party Umno is determined to have a Malaysia of categories, more importantly, weighted categories.Unlike his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin, Najib has issued a blank cheque to the people of Malaysia, and will hope with all his heart that not enough choose to cash it before he gets a fresh mandate.Either way, Najib will be the newsmaker of 2011.

Inter-faith, the faithless and spellers

Najib’s faith will be tested by his ability to allow for a multi-religious Malaysia to exist. No bold goals, just to sell to Malaysians that in Malaysia there is religious space. To non-Malaysians this might seem like a routine task, but we locals know better, we know the battering diversity took under the rule of Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The man-god who was quite happy to see his people move inexorably to social separation as long as he stayed in power. The reincarnated Umno depicts his intolerance, therefore for Najib to triumph he has to undo the legacy.

As the recent “church redo for PM’s visit” fiasco suggests, he might want to be fair, but those around him think fair is an inappropriate gauge when it comes to religion. So his yet-to-be-finalised (finalised as in the name, which is contentions to some) committee on religious understanding moves from venue to venue, having limited and closed-door discussions, and will get absolutely nowhere.I believe in 2011 he will be found out, and the Christian vote most definitely will not head to BN if there is a general election.

The Sarawak polls

The definitive event to determine if Sarawak, and by extension, rural Malaysia is ready to move on or away from Barisan Nasional. Parti Pesaka Bersatu Bumiputera (PBB) will lead Sarawak BN to victory, but that is however not the crux of the matter. What will be is the size of victory.BN has won all Borneo by-elections except Sibu’s, but the handouts are more spread out in a state-wide election, and people may not find an overemphasise in any particular seat. More might follow their conscience and in the more mixed seats this might result in Pakatan Rakyat (PR) especially the DAP gaining a few more seats.

The votes moving away from BN have been long anticipated. Again, it is about magnitude. PR now has seven (six DAP, one PKR) of the 71 seats available. Taking over the state is unlikely, but breaking the 20-seat ceiling would be colossal, and I am predicting somewhere closer to 20 but not past it.This is not colossal nor rings the end of Taib Mahmud and family, but it ends the idea Sarawak is a sure-thing for BN. The DAP will have to be in top form to lead the onslaught.

The general election

If it happens will be one of strategic results as BN will run the country after it.PKR will not face an “Apocalypse Now” scenario like in 2008, but neither will they scale the joys of 2008. They’d end up with probably 20-25 parliamentary seats and be party to a PR-led Selangor. The balance for PKR will be decided by their appeal to Indian voters. They were the most active in the party polls even if none of them actually ended up in senior party posts.

When we speak of the Indian votes, the reference is to the overwhelming Tamil-speaking population. Those who do not share the same aspirations as R. Sivarasa or N. Surendran, but more so with N. Gobalakrishnan and former ISA detainee and Hindraf activist Uthaya Kumar. Poorer and with lower social mobility, the former BN vote bank.

PKR does not have to be race-driven, but if it wants to show race-sensitivities then parading a bunch of affluent English-speaking lawyers just does not do it.The extent of that drop will determine PKR’s fortune.
It’s the DAP and PAS who will hold up the PR ship. And they can both hit 30 plus parliamentary seats themselves, or in a worst-case scenario roll back to 20 only. I do not see the worst case materialising.

Anwar stagnates, and Nurul Izzah comes good

The late developments of 2010, with Anwar Ibrahim’s APCO-induced suspension from Parliament and cloak and dagger sodomy trial, may not lead to actual jail time — but do underline that the opposition leader may have passed his peak.

From the pre-election 2008 charade of whether his married daughter might be waiting for her husband to allow her to contest, to today as outspoken and broad-bold ideas promulgator — Nurul Izzah is steadying herself for national leadership
.
Deputy president Azmin Ali’s concerns about his vice-president might cloud some of the issues, but he will realise he has to spend more time propping himself up as a potential party leader rather than worrying about how a 30-year-old tries to find her footing in senior party politics.

The third force, liberals and Facebook groups

Malik Imtiaz explains the liberal cry in Malaysia. Liberals have not been uninvolved although the ideological void in the opposition parties has discouraged them from signing up.They are the lawyers for PR (Edmund Bon), the media machine of the opposition (Raja Petra Kamarudin) and social empowerers (Haris Ibrahim and The People’s Parliament). And at a broad level, the Internet activists — the legions. They are diverse and they are many, probably disagree with each other more than not, but they hold to be true this dictum, participation is paramount and transparency the oxygen of society. Finally, Zaid Ibrahim’s KITA (Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air). All of them opposed to the politics of “same old, same old.”The Liberals and KITA are set for electioneering. The Internet peeps are the king-makers in all urban seats and strong affecters of the mixed seats.Just like how Anwar was instrumental in getting the DAP and PAS to make unprecedented gains in 2008, someone or group has to step in to steer all those who at an ideas level are determined to end BN’s rule, to steer them to a single line.

The Shi’ite will hit the fan

The International Islamic University rector has announced that there are no Shi’ite students in his institution. Shi’ite Muslims in Malaysia have come under scrutiny as religious departments are sending the message Malaysia is more specific than just a country with many Muslims, it can only have Muslims from the Sunni side of the divide, and more specifically from the Syafie school.

The question remains if this will be tenable, and in 2011 more question marks will rise. The Muslim world outside Malaysia’s single permitted school is large and pertinently long-standing and established. They are not cults, not to most Muslims outside Malaysia. The period of sending Malaysian religious students abroad, globalisation and multiculturalism has brought this reality upon us.Of course, if there are so many Iranians in Malaysia, and Iran being largely a Shi’ite country, there are many Shi’ites in Malaysia. Now make that logical progression for all kinds of social phenomenon in present Malaysia, and then the Shi’ite count goes up exponentially.Even Saudi Arabia allows Shi’ites to carry on with their ways.Which brings to light the fear of singularity former Perlis mufti Asri Zainul Abidin painted last week. Is Islam in Malaysia big enough for all of the Islam outside Malaysia?Look out for this space. It’s politics, not whether everyone likes Imam Hussein.

-BH

Irene turut menggesa jakarta mengambil iktibar supaya mempertahankan hak rakyatnya.

WHO IS ANTI-HINDU?

salam kepada semua...

WHO IS ANTI HINDU?
ARE YOU KNOW?

YOU WANTS TO KNOW?

ASK  N.GOBALAKRISHNAN......

HE KNOW THE ANSWER.....
N. Gobalakrishnan continued his onslaught against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today and called the PKR de facto leader anti-Hindu for failing the Indian community. The Padang Serai MP has been on a rampage against the party leadership via microblogging site Twitter over the past weeks, centring most of his attacks on Anwar and newly-elected deputy president Azmin Ali.

He told The Malaysian Insider that both Anwar and Azmin have been “cheating and bluffing the Indians”, claiming that the community had become worst off after Pakatan Rakyat claimed Selangor.Gobalakrishnan (picture) said today that Anwar was showing his true colours by refusing to re-open the Sivan temple in Petaling Jaya and denying the Hindu community a state executive councillor in Selangor.

“Anwar continues to victimise the Hindus. I think he is anti-Hindu by the way he is behaving. I am not asking to remove anybody but include another Hindu (in the Selangor state executive council) so we won’t have any of these problems.“They want our votes, we vote. I go ask and beg the people to vote. The day I joined PKR, the Hindus and Indians were throwing stones at me. Nobody wanted join Keadilan,” he told reporters while flanked by former MIC leader KP Samy and former MIC Youth information chief S. Subramaniam during a press conference.

He pointed out that 90 per cent of the Indian community in Selangor are Hindus but ironically they are not represented in the state government. He stressed that it was his responsibility to fight for the Indian community regardless of party lines.“It is my responsibility as a leader of the Indian community to represent the Indians who are neglected. The Indians in this country need proper representation and that is why I been vocal.
“And that is the sole reason why Anwar has pushed me aside and also to placate Azmin Ali and (his wife) Shamsida (Taharin). I am not concerned about all that, I want Datuk Seri Anwar to re-open the (Sivan) temple to the public,” he said.He also spoke again on the closure of the Sivan temple on Bukit Gasing in Petaling Jaya, which he claimed had been Anwar’s doing. He added that there are others temples in Pakatan Rakyat (PR) states which are facing similar problems.
